Magnetic Particle Testing (MPI)

Magnetic particle testing (MPI) detects surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic parts (susceptible to magnetization) such as carbon steel, iron, nickel, and some of their alloys. The process involves inducing a magnetic field on a component, and dry or wet magnetic particles are applied.  At an area where there is a flux leakage (or interruption of the magnetic field), the particles visibly gather, and we evaluate them to applicable codes, standards, and client specifications.

We offer MPI for a wide range of applications, including the testing services for welds, piping, and other components such as shafts and structures.

Magnetic Particle Testing techniques include:

  • Dry powder inspection – Multiple colors available for high color contrast.
  • Wet non-fluorescent inspection
  • Wet fluorescent inspection

MPI is also a valuable means of checking for cracking, including:

  • Stress corrosion cracking
  • Fatigue cracks
  • Corrosion-related flaws
  • Surface and near-surface discontinuities

Benefits

  • Cost-effective
  • Quick inspection
  • Portable
  • Reliable in critical defect detection

Our highly trained technicians can mobilize portable inspection units (AC or DC yoke) anywhere in the United States.

Wherever You Need Us

Because we’re equipped to mobilize testing services across the United States, our customers can get their inspections done whenever and wherever they need them. That includes pipeline operators working in remote environments or extreme conditions. Our technology and more than 35 years of experience mean customers can rely on us for thorough, detailed, and rapid inspection results.
